Stitt is simply letter perfect during each of 16 turns on this CD. Richards' arrangements are the more "latinized," with the Kenton influence evident in charts for an octet, with the spotlight on Sonny, who is so good, boldly assertive and lyrical with each Bird-like execution, you really have to pinch yourself to stay awake because his unfailing brilliance is easy to take for granted after the first couple of tracks.5/5(2).

Edward Hammond Boatner Jr. (February 2, – July 22, ), known professionally as Sonny Stitt, was an American jazz saxophonist of the bebop/hard bop idiom. Known for his warm tone, he was one of the best-documented saxophonists of his generation, recording more than albums.

That is not the case with In Walked Sonny. It is as great a record as he ever made. Blakey was joined on the session by Sonny Stitt. The two of them had cut the album, A Jazz Message, for Impulse in In Walked Sonny is a fabulous reunion of the two giants. Stitt was coming off a particularly strong series of albums for Muse in the early 70s.5/5(3).

Sonny Stitt - Playing Arrangements From The Pen Of Johnny Richards () I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty.

This CD set contains two of Sonny Stitts earliest, most important albums. Backing his superb work on alto and tenor are bands conducted by two of the finest jazz arrangers: Johnny Richards, and Quincy Jones in one of his firstand bestefforts in the field.
